Liverpool news: Daniel Sturridge is not the same player since Luis Suarez left – Carragher

The England international was handed his third start of the season yesterday the game against Newcastle, but was unable to find the back of the net as Liverpool played out a 1-1 draw.

He has seemingly put his injury woes behind him this season after recovering from a hamstring strain but has been unable to dislodge Roberto Firmino as Jurgen Klopp’s leading striker.

Last season, Sturridge scored just three league goals in 20 appearances, but he started just seven of those games.

In the 2013/14 campaign when Brendan Rodgers led Liverpool to a tantalisingly close title challenge only to fall short at the final hurdle, Sturridge finished the campaign with 22 goals in 29 matches, starting 26.

He was able to strike up a fearsome relationship with Suarez, who managed 31 goals that campaign, but the Uruguay international left to join Barcelona in 2014 where he has continued his impressive scoring feat with 87 in just 101 La Liga appearances.

And Anfield legend Carragher Suarez’s departure coupled with his injury woes have been key to Sturridge’s dip in form over the years.

“Because he doesn’t play much now, whenever we talk about Sturridge we keep going back to that season when Liverpool nearly won the league – he was devastating with Luis Suarez,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“I don’t think that player is there now, whether that’s due to injuries or not playing enough.

“The reason he played today [yesterday] is because Roberto Firmino is not playing well.

“If Firmino is playing his normal level, then Sturridge doesn’t play. Klopp doesn’t fancy Sturridge, that’s why he doesn’t play.”
