Las Vegas MAPPED: Where is Mandalay Bay? Shooting rocks Las Vegas strip

Police are responding to reports of an active shooter after an automatic gunfire was heard from about 10.20pm on Sunday (6.20am BST).

“Two or three” gunmen reportedly opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel, which was already on lockdown after a security guard was shot down.

Two people have died while a further 24 have been taken to the Las Vegas hospital with suspected gunshot wounds, according to a spokesman.

Witness attending the Route 91 Harvest country music festival reported “bullets dying everywhere” and “multiple shooters”.

One witness told KSVN he heard “hundreds of shot”, while several artists performing at the music festival also reported hearing gunshots.

Country singer Jake Owen tweeted: “Gun shots!!! Vegas. Pray to god. Love you guys. Love you Pearl.”

The area is now on lockdown, while all clubs and businesses on the strip are closed.

An Australian witness staying at the Mandalay Bay hotel told CNN there was mayhem after the sound of matching gun fire.

He said: “The initial gun shots were machine gun fire. We knew it was chaos and mayhem because people were running out of everywhere.”

He also described confusion as police came across a group of guests taking cover.

He said: “We were tucked away, about 12 of us, in a carpark thing, and the SWAT team came and said hands up.

“We didn’t know where the shooter [was]. We knew [the police] were confused like we were. Police ushered us out.”

Another witness said: “Police said run and we started running.”

Where is Mandalay Bay?

Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino is located on the south end of the Vegas strip on Las Vegas Boulevard and across from McCarran International Airport.

Flights in and out of the airport have been temporarily halted in response to the shooting

Las Vegas police has told people to avoid the area around the Mandalay Bay Casino.

Police tweeted: “We’re investigating reports of an active shooter near/around Mandalay Bay Casino. Asking everyone to please avoid the area.”

Police later tweeted that “one suspect is down”.
