Edmonton Police Chief Rod Knecht said the incidents are being investigated “as an act of terror”.
Revealing details of the manhunt, the officer said the first incident involved an attack on an officer at the city’s Commonwealth Stadium.
A van was driven into an officer who was then stabbed, before the attacker fled.
The driver was later stopped in Jasper Avenue where a chase ensued.
He drove along a busy road, speeding towards revellers.

“There were people flying and everything,” witness Kim Anderson said.
“I’m shocked — I just see people flying.”
Officers rushed in to set up road blocks as they hunted the fleeing suspect.
The public has been warned to avoid the area.
Police spokesman Scott Pattison said: “The officer was approached by an unknown male suspect in a vehicle, at which time the suspect rammed the police cruiser.
“The suspect got out of his vehicle and an altercation ensued.
“The officer sustained some injuries, he’s in hospital, and thankfully he’s doing OK.”
