Bali’s highest volcano Mount Agung, which is on the brink of erupting, is just one of the around 130 volcanoes in Indonesia.
The interactive map, from MAGMA Indonesia, shows that white smoke is coming out of Mount Agung amid fears of imminent eruption.
The map also reveals the location of a 4.2 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday as hundreds of tremors shake Mount Agung daily.
Indonesia has issued the highest possible volcano alert to prevent a repeat of the volcano’s 1963 eruption that killed more than 1,100 people.
The islands of Indonesia are dotted with about 130 volcanoes, making Indonesia the country believed to have the biggest volcano threat to life.
The Global Volcanic Hazards and Risk report, published in 2015, ranked Indonesia in the top spot due to the level of exposure to active volcanoes.
The chapter on global threat levels said that Indonesia has a very large number of people living within 30 km of an active volcano.
It said: “Indonesia by far has the highest level of volcanic threat worldwide, with about 30% of the population living close to volcanoes.”
Indonesia has more than 17,000 islands, of which 8,000 are inhabited. This means the population and volcanoes share small islands.
After Indonesia, the countries facing the biggest threat were the island nations of the Philippines and Japan.
