Britain can be ‘part of REFORMED EU’ Macron claims in vision for Europe speech

The offer came as the French President set out his grand vision for a “reformed and simplified” union in a major speech in Paris yesterday.

Setting out his blueprint for change, the centrist leader said his version of the EU would feature a joint defence force, a euro-zone budget to bail out struggling economies and the creation of a European border police.

He said: “In a few years, if they want, the United Kingdom could find its place… in this reformed and simplified EU that I’m proposing.

“I cannot imagine that the United Kingdom could not.”

But the 39-year-old leader acknowledged the bloc is “more fragile than ever” and had to address key issues such as migration and stalled economic growth.

On his vision for a combined EU defence force, he said: “At the beginning of the next decade, Europe must have a joint intervention force, a common defence budget and a joint doctrine for action.”

And he spoke of his desire to see “the gradual creation of a European border police”.

He said: “I want for us to have an effective European border police that everywhere has strict border control and makes sure anyone who can’t stay here is sent to their countries.

“It is only with Europe that we can efficiently protect our borders and welcome those who need protection in a dignified manner, and at the same time send back those who are not eligible for asylum.”

The French President was elected on a platform of sweeping EU reform, but exactly much of his ambitious agenda he will be able to put in to practice is in doubt after key ally Angela Merkel lost ground in Germany’s election over the weekend.

Merkel’s centre-right Christian Democratic Union party is expected to go in to coalition with the left wing Greens and the liberal Free Democrats (FDP) – both of which are opposed to many of Macron’s ideas.

In response to the French President’s speech, FDP leader Alexander Lambsdorff tweeted: ”You don’t strengthen Europe with new pots of money.”

And an official statement issued by the party said: “The problem in Europe is not a lack of public funds, but the lack of reform.

“A euro zone budget would set exactly the wrong incentives.”
