Facebook users have flocked to Twitter to complain about the outage, with streams of tweets saying that Facebook is down today.

Independent website Down Detector has also received reports from users saying that Facebook is down.

According to the outage monitor, the problem seems to be mainly affecting users in Europe.

Some 57 per cent of those affected are experiencing a total blackout while 25 per cent are having login issues.

The issues affecting the leading social network appeared to have begun around 11.30am BST.

Express.co.uk have contacted Facebook for comment.

Reporting the outage on Twitter, one user said: “#Facebook seems to be down worldwide!”

While another added: “Just about to publish my work on Facebook after working on it 20 hours the suddenly  #facebookdown“.

And one tweeted: “Is #Facebook  down for everybody? It looks like it’s a worldwide thing…  #Facebookdown”.

The issues appear to be affecting not just users of the regular Facebook, but those who also use Facebook’s Business Manager.

This is a special version of the leading social networking website that is used to run big pages and ads.

Facebook users on Twitter have also reported problems accessing Facebook Messenger.

The outage comes days after Facebook Messenger went down for thousands of users of the hugely popular chat app currently unable to access the service.

It’s currently unclear what is causing the problems but some users have mentioned the app keeps crashing after updating to iOS 11.

One Apple smartphone owner reported, “When I open messenger it goes back to a black screen after a few seconds on my iPhone.”

While another added, “Once I’ve opened the app it just automatically closes. I’ve tried updating the iOS on my phone, turning it on/off, and reinstalling messenger and it’s still happening.”

Another tweet revealed “Anyone else having their @facebook messenger app crashing instantly on iOS 11.0.”

It was thought during the outage that reinstalling the app fixed the problems but Messenger users are saying this isn’t working either.

One users who tried this fix said, “Uninstalling and reinstalling only worked for a few minutes. Back to the problem.”

In a statement after the outage took place Facebook said it fixed the problem with users told to make sure their app is up to date.

The firm said: “On Friday September 22, 2017, some people reported having trouble accessing Messenger on iOS.

“We quickly investigated, and we have released an update.

“If you continue to experience problems please look in the App Store for version 135.1 and uninstall/reinstall the app. We are very sorry for any inconvenience.”
