Man Utd news: I have my reservations about Marcus Rashford – Stuart Pearce

Rashford, 19, burst onto the scene for Manchester United in the 2015/16 term and has continued to express why he is one of world football’s hottest young talents.

The forward has bagged five goals in all competitions for Jose Mourinho’s side already this season.

has been deployed on the left-wing following the signing of Romelu Lukaku for much of the campaign so far, but he spearheaded the attack and scored twice in United’s 4-1 Carabao Cup win over Burton Albion on Wednesday.

He has even been compared to the likes of hotshots Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele by Phil Neville after being shortlisted for the Golden Boy award.

But Pearce has admitted he does not want to blow Rashford’s trumpet too much due to the hype surrounding young English prospects in the past.

“Firstly, I have to put my colours on the mast and say he’s an outstanding talent,” Pearce told Sky Sports’ The Debate.

“There’s a reservation from me as an ex-England youth type manager that says ‘how many young English players have we bigged up that we are going to build a team around’?

“Andros Townsend? Micah Richards? The multitude of these young players, even Theo Walcott that have been a little bit disappointing.

“The Ox, Phil Jones? They’ve had a good career so far, but I expected a little bit more.

“That’s why there is a reservation with me about Rashford.

“I think Mbappe has delivered better on the international stage than Marcus has at this moment in time.

“I also am a little bit disappointed with the usage of Marcus at England youth tournaments – the lack of tournament football we’ve given him.

“He’s an outstanding talent… I hope he goes on to be everything we want him to be as an English player.”

will be looking to maintain their unbeaten run and continue to mount a title charge when they take on Southampton at St Mary’s tonight (3pm).
