Liverpool news: Daniel Sturridge was never up for sale this summer – Jurgen Klopp

Sturridge’s injury woes over the years had led to increasing speculation over his future at Anfield.

He only started seven Premier League games last season, scoring just three, and was subject to heavy interest from West Ham leading up to the summer transfer window.

But Klopp opted against selling the 28-year-old, who has not managed more than 10 league goals a season since the 2013/14 campaign.

The former Chelsea striker has fallen behind Roberto Firmino in the pecking order at the Merseyside outfit.

But Klopp insists he only spoke to Sturridge this summer about what his plans are for the season ahead at Liverpool.

“Yes, we did talk and it was good,” said Klopp.

“It was not a talk of him saying, ‘When can I go?’ or, ‘Where can I go?’ Not that talk, but about what we planned for this season.

“It is not he could be important. He is important. But in the end, I have 11 players and stuff like this.

“We are fine.”

The England international played his first 90 minutes of the season in last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Burnley.

And Klopp is happy with his development and hopes he has put his fitness woes behind him.

“He’s always getting better because he can train all the time,” he added.

“We decided not to take him to Leicester [in midweek] and that was a responsible decision. We would have taken him, but he would not have started. Maybe he would have had 10 minutes, 30 minutes or extra-time.

“But then we decided it was better to stay here and train twice, because he can get better physically.”
