Hurricane Maria damage pictured: Dominican Republic devastated by killer storm

The storm has caused 17 deaths so far on its deadly path through the Caribbean in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

Although Maria had dropped in intensity after smashing Puerto Rico it was still a Category 3 Hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 115 mile per hour when it hit the Dominican Republic, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

People took to roofs to avoid the rising water as the hurricane brought storm surges of up to six feet.

Images show residents of Higuey watching helplessly as the streets become waterlogged.

More than 5,500 people were evacuated from the country following damage caused by Category 5 Hurricane Irma.

Houses along the coast appear close to collapse after they were subjected to the power of a second hurricane in the space of a month.

Roofs and walls have been stripped from these buildings in Punta Cana, which was one of the worst hit areas of the country.

Strong winds uprooted trees and pulled down signs on the island sending dangerous debris flying as winds raged and leaving the landscape blanketed in the scares of the storm.

More than 900,000 people were left without electricity as the country avoided a direct hit from the deadly storm.

Hurricane Maria is set to continue on its path of destruction with new warnings issued.

An advisory read: “A dangerous storm surge accompanied by large and destructive waves will raise water levels by as much as 9 to 12 feet above normal tide levels within the hurricane warning area of the southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.”
