Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk could have won Jurgen Klopp the Premier League – Quinn

That is the opinion of former Premier League striker and Liverpool fan Micky Quinn.

Southampton defender Van Dijk was linked with a move to Anfield throughout the summer.

Saints refused to sell the Dutchman, even though he handed in an official transfer request.

Quinn is angry Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp did not sign a defender in the summer and has labelled the German and the club “arrogant” for the failed Van Dijk deal.

“He hasn’t addressed that defensive side in two years since he’s been there,” Quinn said on talKSPORT.

“I think the football has improved no end, they’re a joy to watch and they’re edge of the seat to watch because of the shambles when they’re setting up for set pieces trying to defend.

“To not address a defender in the last transfer window is bordering on negligence.

“If you’re a Liverpool fan you’re on the edge of your seat trying to defend, you’ve got to score four goals or five goals to win a football match.

“Going back to that transfer window, to just basically think ‘we are going to get Van Dijk’ right the way through, right the way to the wire was again a little bit of arrogance.

“Not just from Klopp, from Liverpool Football Club.

“Then to sell (Mamadou) Sakho for £26million who had a great season with (Crystal) Palace, keeping them up next year, it is just a defensive shambles.

“He hasn’t addressed it, whether they get Van Dijk next January, (Naby) Keita’s coming next year.

“I fancied a title challenge if they got Van Dijk this season, for me that’s out the window the title challenge.”
