Hurricane Maria path: Puerto Rico pummelled by storm sending debris flying through the air

The strength of the wind can be seen at full force as the cameraperson gets too close to the door and has to make a hasty retreat.

The camera is then tilted as others can be seen taking shelter inside.

The storm battered the US Virgin island of St Croix but the island was spared the eye of the hurricane.

It comes two weeks after devastated the region.

Thousands of Puerto Ricans were told to “evacuate or die” as Maria approached the island after it caused shocking damage on Dominica, leaving the small Caribbean island in tatters and virtually uncontactable.

Maria, which has so far killed eight people, is currently packing maximum sustained winds near 165 mph (270 kph).

It has just been downgraded to a category 4 storm, although it is still considered “extremely dangerous”.

The eyewall of Maria was recorded over the Puerto Rican island of Vieques earlier this morning as it makes its way northwards, according to the latest update from the US National Hurricane Center (NHC). 

Officials in earlier this month, because it could prove extremely dangerous when hit by the winds of Maria.

There are also concerns about the heavy rain, with some of the rivers on Puerto Rico already breaking their banks.
