Shots Fired at Washington High School, One Student Killed

One student was killed and at least three others were injured Wednesday after gunfire erupted at a Washington state high school.

“The shooter has been apprehended and taken into custody,” Spokane Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer said as Freeman High School in the town of Rockford was on lockdown and deputies were questioning witnesses. “They are interviewing the kids who were at the school at the time.”

Three “pediatric patients” were at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children’s Hospital and in stable condition, NBC News has confirmed.

Schaeffer described the victims as “children” but gave no other information about them or the suspected shooter. But he said the suspect acted alone.

“There was just one shooter,” he said.

Meanwhile, frantic parents were being directed to a staging area and waiting for news of their trapped children.

“This morning’s shooting at Freeman High School is heartbreaking,” Gov. Jay Inslee said in a statement. “As Spokane County officials continue their investigation to get the answers to the questions so many of us have during these unthinkable tragedies, the Washington State Patrol and all state agencies will do whatever we can to help provide support and comfort in the days and weeks to come.”
