Tottenham news: Pochettino discusses Janssen future and explains Champions League snub

Janssen endured a difficult first season at Tottenham following his £17million move from AZ Alkmaar just over a year ago.

The Holland international arrived at White Hart Lane after scoring 32 goals for AZ but found the back of the net just six times in his 38 appearances for Spurs – starting just 14 of those games.

This summer Pochettino signed another back-up striker in Fernando Llorente, who joined on deadline day from Swansea in a £14m deal.

And to add insult to injury, Pochettino left Janssen out of Tottenham’s 25-man Champions League squad, along with forgotten winger Erik Lamela.

But Pochettino believes Janssen still has a future at Spurs and admits the 23-year-old could force his way into Champions League contention in January.

“Yes of course [he has a future],” Pochettino said. “The next question is why he is not in Champions League squad. That is about numbers.

“We only have 17 places [with eight home-grown players required in the selection]. We are 19, so him and [Erik] Lamela we decided [to leave out].

“But in January we check again to see if we change the names in the squad. But, yes, he has a future like other players here.”

Janssen has played one minute of Premier League football so far this season and is expected to remain on the bench when they travel to Everton tomorrow (3pm).
