International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) and MIT are teaming up on a Watson AI lab.

The effort will have IBM spending $240 million over a 10-year period to create a Watson AI lab. The facility will be located at the company’s Research Lab in Cambridge. This will have it close to the MIT campus.

The new Watson AI lab will be co-chaired by Dario Gil, IBM Research VP of AI and IBM Q, and Anantha P. Chandrakasan, the dean of MIT’s School of Engineering. Scientists from the company and MIT will work at the lab alongside, professors and students.

The Watson AI lab will have a focus on the following categories.

  • AI Algorithms
  • Physics of AI
  • Application of AI to Industries
  • Advancing Shared Prosperity Through AI

IBM and MIT also say that the Watson AI lab will have the goal of encouraging students and faculty to create AI companies. The two groups say that they want the research to result in companies that commercializes inventions and technologies made in the lab.

IBM and MIT note that scientists in the Watson AI lab will also be publishing their works, contributing to open source material and push for adherence to ethical uses of artificial intelligence.

“True breakthroughs are often the result of fresh thinking inspired by new kinds of research teams,” MIT President L. Rafael Reif said in a statement. “The combined MIT and IBM talent dedicated to this new effort will bring formidable power to a field with staggering potential to advance knowledge and help solve important challenges.”
