iPhone 8 release date countdown – Price, specs and everything you need to know

There’s just one week to go until reveals all about its next iPhone.

Expected to be called the , this updated device looks set to be the most radically different smartphone to have ever come out of Cupertino.

And with the iPhone having turned 10 this year Apple is expected to pull out all of the stops for this blockbuster launch.

So, if you are a huge Apple fan, here’s everything you need to know ahead of its big release next week.

WHEN WILL THE iPHONE 8 BE UNVEILED?

Apple has just sent out invites to a major event on Tuesday 12 September.

The launch gets underway at 10am local time (6pm BST) and will take place at Apple’s new HQ in Cupertino.

Apple Park only recently opened and includes a purpose built theatre named after the firm’s founder Steve Jobs.

The 1,000 seat auditorium is where Tim Cook will unveil the iPhone 8 with the device expected to be shown to the world at around 11am local time (7pm BST).

WHAT’S NEW ON THE iPHONE 8?

After months of rumours, leaks and speculation we have a good idea of what’s to come on the iPhone 8.

Fans look set to be treated to a giant edge-to-edge display which will cover almost the entire front of the phone. 

A new glass and metal design could allow the iPhone 8 to be charged wirelessly and an upgraded A11 processor looks set to bring one of the fastest experiences ever to a smartphone.

Other features that could arrive next week include a refreshed dual-lens camera that will make augmented reality more mainstream and the inclusion of facial/iris recognition.

With Apple covering the whole front of the iPhone with a screen it appears the home button is being banished to the history books.

It’s currently unclear if Apple will just rely on facial recognition technology to unlock the device or include an embedded fingerprint scanner under the display.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

Rumours are rife that the iPhone 8 will be the most expensive smartphone Apple has ever made.

Some reports have even put a price of around $1000 on this latest device.

According to a new report by The New York Times, this ultra-premium (£780).

The US newspaper says this is price is based on accounts from those who have already been briefed on the product and who requested to remain anonymous.

It’s unclear if this price will be the base model and whether costs will be even higher for the top-of-the-line device with extra memory.

Apple’s current smartphone line-up of devices starts at £599 for the iPhone 7 with 32GB of onboard storage, but quickly rises to £919 for the maxed-out iPhone 7 Plus.

WHEN WILL IT GO ON SALE?

Fans will find out an official release date next Tuesday but Apple usually releases its new smartphones around a week after they are unveiled.

Friday’s are the favoured date for Apple fans to pick up their shiny new iPhones which could mean the new call maker will hit shops on September 22.

However, before you get too excited it’s worth noting that the iPhone 8 is expected to be in huge demand with some recent reports suggesting Apple may struggle to keep up with demand.

This could mean some people may not be able to get their hands on the iPhone 8 until the end of the year.
