Nintendo games update: Bad news for Switch owners as price set to rise for some

It’s now been revealed that some Nintendo Switch games being released will require a MicroSD card.

NBA 2K18 has been confirmed as one such upcoming title, meaning for those buying it, there could be an extra cost involved.

“A microSD card will be needed for certain Nintendo Switch games that contain an especially large amount of content and require additional storage for players to enjoy the full experience,” a statement from Nintendo explains.

It appears that Nintendo are making sure fans know before they buy a game with new updated boxart, confirming whether an SD card is required.

For those who buy these new Switch games but don’t fancy splashing out further, Nintendo have revealed that portions of these titles will be accessible.

“If you purchase a physical version of a game that requires an additional microSD memory card, you will be able to play a portion of the game right out of the box (for example, specific levels or modes),” a representative for Nintendo of America told IGN.

“To enjoy the full game, downloading additional data is required. Depending on the storage requirements for each game, it may be necessary to purchase a microSD card to expand storage space.

“When purchasing a digital version of the game, it may also be necessary to purchase a microSD card depending on the game’s storage requirements and the storage available on the consumer’s Nintendo Switch console.”

This news first surfaced with the announcement of new Switch-themed Micro SD Cards being launched.

These new microSDXC cards will be available from 64GB and 128 GB sizes and will feature the Nintendo Switch logo on them.

Tom Prata, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives had this to say on the deal: “Western Digital is a global leader in memory storage, and its SanDisk brand microSD cards are trusted by consumers around the world.

“These new Nintendo-licensed memory cards provide significant additional storage for digital content, and in many retail locations they will be conveniently displayed alongside Nintendo Switch games and accessories.”

Sven Rathjen, Vice President of Product Marketing, Client Solutions, Western Digital, added: “As more and more amazing games and related content become available for download on Nintendo Switch, our licensed memory cards allow users to quickly and easily expand their storage.

“Nintendo Switch has generated tremendous momentum, and we are thrilled to partner with Nintendo to offer consumers a trusted card for their system.”
