WINDOWS 10 ALERT – PC users urged to upgrade NOW or face security crisis

Windows 10 has been out for over two years now, but those who have yet to upgrade have been urged to do so or risk facing a huge security crisis.

Latest Netmarketshare figures have Microsoft’s Windows as the leading desktop browser, with a staggering 90.70 per cent share.

However, the version of Windows that is most popular is not Microsoft’s latest OS Windows 10 – but Windows 7, released back in 2009.

While Windows 7’s market share is down from 60.75 in August 2015 to 48.43 per cent in August 2017, it’s in fact UP on this time last year.

Then, Windows 7 had a 47.25 per cent market share.

Microsoft have already penciled in the end of support for Windows 7, and it’s not far away.

January 14 2020 will mark the end of life for Windows 7, which is currently the most popular OS on the planet according to Netmarketshare figures.

And these users will need to update to a more recent versions of Windows, or risk exposing themselves to potential cyber attacks.

Earlier this year, the NHS was crippled by the WannaCry cyberattack which affected more than 200,000 victims in 150 countries.

The NHS had been using Windows XP on their computers, with support ending for it back in April 2014.

It’s believed hackers had been able to exploit this vulnerability to spread the terrifying cyber attack, which locked users out of their computers.

And, unless the huge amount of Windows 7 users make the jump to a later version, they could be opening themselves up to a similar threat.

In a warning to Windows users, tech site The Inquirer said: “Microsoft’s increase market share seems to be down to the continuing success of an 8 year old operating system that has been superseded twice.

“In other words, come 2020, we’re going to have the XP debacle all over again.”

They added: “The key problem remains, if Microsoft can’t shift people off Windows 7, without really peeing them off in the process, then we’re setting ourselves up for another End of Life timebomb.”

The news comes as Windows 10 users are gearing up for the upcoming Fall Creators Update.

Microsoft recently revealed at IFA 2017 the big update will have a release date of October 17, and it brings with it mixed reality supported.

It also boasts the new timeline feature and incorporates the Fluent Design system.
