‘France won’t let him get away with anything’ Macron deepens divide between EU and Putin

Western sanctions, imposed after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, have been ratcheted up since pro-Russian rebels carved out a breakaway region in eastern Ukraine.

In an interview with Le Point published yesterday, Mr Macron said: “I speak with everybody. Very directly and very frankly.”

He added: “On Ukraine, we have major differences with Vladimir Putin. I take note of it. France won’t let him get away with anything.”

This is not the first time the French President has had harsh words for Putin’s regime.

Before becoming president, he accused Russia of pursuing “a hybrid strategy combining military intimidation and an information war”.

He also has before accused pro-Kremlin news outlets Russia Today and Sputnik of being “organs of influence and propaganda” against his presidential campaign.

Despite hosting Mr Macron’s nationalist election rival Marine Le Pen a month before the first round of the 2017 French presidential election, Mr Putin has denied trying to influence the French election.

The ongoing conflict between Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian forces has claimed more than 10,000 lives since it began.

Both Germany and France have had little success in persuading both sides to implement a peace deal which was agreed to in Minsk in 2015, it has been reported.

Earlier this year, the French President hosted Mr Putin at the 17th-century palace of Versailles outside Paris, where the two men discussed Ukraine.

During the meeting, both leaders agreed to revive joint working groups, and to reconvene talks with Germany.

However, Mr Putin also used the news conference to call for sanctions on Russia to be lifted, saying they did not help create stability in the east.
