Meningitis symptoms: Seven signs you could have the DEADLY infection

Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord, according to the NHS.

It was announced this week that an A&E department in Northern Ireland is to begin using a new test to identify the infection in less than 60 minutes.

Doctors at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children are introducing the rapid “Lamp” (Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification) test on blood, spinal fluid or nasal swab samples.

Currently the only way to accurately diagnose the condition takes two days, meaning that this new method could eliminate people being treated unnecessarily and the risk of cases being missed.

The new test is also important since meningitis symptoms may not become apparent until the condition is quite advanced.

If not treated quickly the infection can turn very serious, meaning it is vital to catch it early.

According to the NHS, it can lead to complications such as loss of limbs, hearing loss and even death.

Here are seven of the signs you could have the life-threatening illness.

Rash

Many sufferers experience a rash that, at first, looks like small, red pinpricks.

According to the NHS, it can then spread quickly over the body and turn into red or purple blotches.

If you press the side of a glass against the skin and it doesn’t fade, it is a side of blood poisoning caused by meningitis and you should get urgent medical attention.

Fever

You may experience a high temperature.

The NHS say you should look out for a figure of 38C (100.4F) or above.

According to Meningitis Now, you may also get cold hands and feet.

Stiff neck

According to the NHS, a stiff neck could be a symptom.

Severe headaches

Dislike of bright lights

A sensitivity to light is also a sign, according to the NHS.

Vomiting

According to the Mayo Clinic, nausea and vomiting could also be symptoms.

Drowsiness

According to Meningitis Now, finding it difficult to wake up could be an indicator.

Additionally, irritability and a lack of energy could also be symptoms.
