‘Nobody’s seen anything like this’ Donald Trump calls for huge Hurricane Harvey rescue

The US President was joined by his wife, Melania, as they gave a press conference about how the Government has supported Texas which was hit by Hurricane Harvey after it made landfall on Friday.

Mr Trump gave a brief statement thanking Texas Governor Greg Abbott for all his help at the meeting in Corpus Cristi in south Texas before listening to advice from several emergency services leaders.

The US President said wanted the relief effort to stand as an example of how to respond to a storm.

He said: “We want to do it better than ever before.

“This was of epic proportion. Nobody’s ever seen anything like this.”

His trip to Texas was heavily criticised due to the large amounts of security and money needed to protect the president and his wife.

They were taken in a Coast Guard helicopter to survey the floods after the press briefing, with Mr Trump wearing a white “USA” emblazoned cap, while Mrs Trump wore a black “FLOTUS” cap.

However, Mr Abbott praised the President for his response, revealing Mr Trump and his team had been helping Texas for the three weeks prior to Harvey hitting.

He said: “The President called me three weeks before and said: ‘Texas, what do you need? How can we help? You can count on us’.

“We can count on the US President and his staff to help.

“I want to acknowledge the very effective way the President and his staff has helped.”

The slow-moving storm has brought catastrophic flooding to Texas, killed at least nine people, led to mass evacuations and paralyzed Houston, the fourth most-populous U.S. city. Some 30,000 people were expected to seek emergency shelter as the flooding entered its fourth day.

Harvey is the first natural disaster of his White House tenure.

He told the press conference: “This is a very special place in a special state.

“I want to thank my staff and cabinet, we have a fair few here.

“We have had a tremendous group of folks.

“This was of epic proportion, nobody’s seen anything like this.

“Governor, thank you very much and we won’t say congratulations, we can do that when it’s all finished.”
