McGregor vs Mayweather: How the American boxer returned to fitness after retirement

Both have been putting in gruelling training sessions – and none more so than Floyd Mayweather, 40, who has come out of retirement for the fight.

Mayweather is famed for his intense “camp” training, which sees him working out for 10-12 weeks in the “reactivation” stage, where boxers in their late 30s and 40s train.

And now head trainer Joe Spraggan at F45 Training Farringdon has explained how you could get a physique like Mayweather’s.

He said: “To pack on muscle to gain a body like Floyd’s you’ll need to focus on resistance training. Keeping a rep range of 8-12 and performing three to four sets of each exercise will keep you in hypertrophy (muscle building).

“Increasing your rest time to 60-90 seconds will give your muscle time to recover in between sets.

“Make sure you use exercises which use all major muscle groups and compound movements such as deadlifts and bench press, which are ideal for increasing that muscle mass.

“Barbell back squats are an ideal way to increase your strength levels while building your core strength and challenging your whole body, but remember to increase the weight progressively in small increments to avoid injury.”

Mayweather will be in his training camp in the lead up to August 26th, and each of the weeks will be carefully planned to ensure he is in peak performance.

American boxer Mayweather tends to stay close to his fight weight so his focus will be on bringing back muscle memory.

The ten weeks in camp will include two rest days each week with time for conditioning, strength, power and technical exercises.

The boxer has continued to post on Instagram throughout his fight preparation, and as well as traditional gym routines, he has undertaken Bikram yoga sessions too.

The former five-division world champion is undefeated in his boxing career and could continues his running streak if he beats Conor McGregor, 29, on Saturday.

Such an incredible career has done wonders for the boxer’s bank balance, and Floyd Mayweather’s net worth is approximately £270million ($340million) according to Forbes.

He has earned about £550m ($700m) during his career, and is expected to pocket an additional £78m ($100m) when he fights McGregor.

Mayweather topped the Forbes list of highest paid athletes in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and was ranked number 34 in a list of America’s richest entrepreneurs under 40 last year.

As well as boxing, the American heads The Money Team – a business venture that invests in a range of areas including fashion, music, sport and entertainment.
