Super Mario Odyssey was given an October 27 release date on Nintendo Switch.

The Nintendo Switch release even contains a special NES surprise for fans of Mario Bros.

During a recent hands-on with the game, it was revealed that levels will be filled with 2D sections when players enter special pipes.

As Mario merges with the wall, players must guide him to the exit, all the while avoiding Bullet Bills, stomping Goombas and collecting coins in classic 2D gameplay.

It’s very similar to The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, which saw Link solve puzzles and reach secret areas by shuffling along walls.

Another nod to the past involves Pauline from the original Donkey Kong.

Since escaping from Donkey Kong’s clutches, Pauline has become mayor of New Donk City, and gives Mario a mission to find musicians to play a club.

It’s unclear how big a part Pauline will play in the new game, but with Nintendo including 2D sections and the world containing a number of skyscrapers, perhaps we’ll see a Donkey Kong/King Kong homage at some point in the game.

Fans will also be able to access secret areas by wearing different costumes.
